What Remains – Lucas Artists Residency Program

February 2025 · Montalvo Arts Center, Saratoga, California
Site-responsive installation; oak bark, redwood branch, wire
W 8′ × H 5′ × D 5″

The piece is made of oak bark left after carving one of the [Two Xylophones] from fallen oak, suspended from a long redwood branch with thin wire. The wire came from a small spool a friend I met at Montalvo gave me years earlier. I had kept it and brought it to the residency, trusting it would find its place. And it did. The installation is ephemeral and fragile.

I am deeply mindful of the entropy already at work in the world, and I choose materials that carry minimal emissions and waste. Here, even the bark is leftover from another work. In the end, What Remains is the attention, the gesture, and, in this particular installation, the memory of a friendship woven into the work.

Part of my 2025 residency at Montalvo Arts Center.
