Forest Script – Lucas Artists Residency Program

February 2025 · Montalvo Arts Center, Saratoga, California
Site-responsive installation; eucalyptus bark
W 5′ × H 3′ × D 6″

Pieces of eucalyptus bark found on-site, engraved by hand to mimic the marks insects leave in wood: a minimal intervention guided by the poetry of the forest. Eucalyptus is not native to California, yet it has become deeply embedded in these landscapes, its bark a familiar texture. During my walks, I found a place among the trees, not far from where I gathered the bark, and placed the pieces against them. The installation is ephemeral; it will not last.

Paying close attention to the nature around me is central to my practice, and this work is what emerged from that attention. In all my residencies, I bring no materials; I work only with what the land offers. Forest Script emerged alongside [Two Xylophones], from the same daily walks.

Part of my 2025 residency at Montalvo Arts Center.
